Rice is the seed of the grass species Oryza sativa (Asian rice) or Oryza glaberrima (African rice). As a cereal grain, it is the most widely consumed staple food for a large part of the world’s human population, especially in Asia.
The rice plant can grow to 1–1.8 m (3.3–5.9 ft.) tall, occasionally more depending on the variety.
Rice can grow in all the geographical zones of Nigeria depending on the variety and soil fertility, the area of land used for rice cultivation is relatively about 2 million hectares, and the survey has it that Nigeria potential for cultivation is about 5 million hectares. This is a plus for Nigeria.
Nigeria is the largest producer of rice in West Africa and the 3rd in Africa after Egypt and Madagascar producing about 3 million metric tons on the average annually.
To the average Nigerian, rice needs no introduction because it has become one of the most important foods in the country, consumed by both the wealthy and the poor.
Rice is sold in all markets across Nigeria though in varying measures or in 50kg bags most times.

Kebbi and Kano states are the leading states in rice production; Kebbi produces 2.05 million metric tons in the wet season and 1.51 million metric tons in the dry season while Kano produces 1.86 and 0.96 million metric tons during the wet and dry seasons respectively over the same period under review.
From Abakpa market Ebonyi state, the wholesale price of Rice (Imported and Local) is NGN30, 000 and NGN15, 000, and from Argungun market Kebbi state, the price of Rice (Imported, Local and Paddy) is NGN15, 000, NGN26,000 and NGN9,000 respectively.
